2. Once Upon a Time in America (1984) -Director: Sergio Leone The film follows two friends that become gangsters, over four decades. De Niro and James Woods are great in the film.
3. Midnight Run (1988) - Director: Martin
Brest De Niro plays a bounty hunter bringing in an embezzler played by Charles Grodin. Unfortunately for De Niro's character, Grodin's character is being hunted down by a mobster played by Dennis Farina. The film is a smart and very funny buddy movie.
4. The Deer Hunter (1978) -Director: Michael Cimino
Robert De Niro with Meryl Streep. 'Nuff said. The film looks at the effects of Vietnam on three soldiers. It's top shelf acting cast that also includes Christopher Walken allows the film to become a great character study, even as it wallows in violence.
5. Cape Fear (1991) - Director: Martin Scorsese
It was recently suggested that I do a post on the greatest remakes. This film will most likely make that post. Again, De Niro has the cajones to take on a role already defined by a legend. The original Cape Fear starred Robert Mitchum as the villain. This version is not quite as good as the original, but has an interesting, although not surprising considering Scorsese was the director, twist - No one is innocent.
